Frequently Asked Questions
The questions I get asked most, answered plainly. If yours is not here, ask me directly.
What kind of work do you take on?
Three kinds. Management consulting, which covers strategic planning, business process re-engineering, project management and business analysis. Coaching and training, which covers leadership development, productivity tools, and the systems and standard operating procedures a small business actually runs on. And IT services, from websites and newsletters through to help desk and collaboration systems.
What are the biggest projects you have run?
Two stand out. At IATA I managed the BSP data centre in Sydney, which cleared over AU$3.3 billion a year in ticket settlements between travel agents and member airlines, and I led the software development of their second generation settlement system. At Flight Centre I ran an AU$10 million transformation that re-equipped all 200 shops across Canada, the UK, Australia and New Zealand. Hewlett-Packard's Y2K crisis management came later, coordinating 28 countries across Europe.
Do you speak at conferences and train teams?
Yes, and the record goes back to 1989. I have presented on computer forensics, IT project management, data centre structure and crisis planning, from Calgary in 1989 through to Brisbane in 2005, with stops in Sydney, Los Angeles, Maastricht, Washington and New Plymouth along the way.
Where are you based, and do you work outside Ontario?
Kingsville, Ontario, in the Windsor-Essex region. The 40+ years behind that were spent across 30 countries in North America, Europe and Australasia, so working across time zones and cultures is familiar ground. Most work happens remotely, and I will come on site when that is what the job needs.
What is in the Global Experience timeline?
The timeline carries 12 roles, most recent first, each one carrying its period, the places it covered, the responsibilities it held and the technologies involved. The map on that page shows roughly how many years I spent in each country.
What kind of documents have you written?
Everything from technical papers through to the reports a board and its stakeholders have to act on. They are grouped into seven regions: Asia, Australia, Cambodia, Canada, Europe, New Zealand and Switzerland.
What is the quickest way to reach you?
Book a time directly on my calendar. If the question is shorter than a meeting, the contact form reaches me just as fast, and the phone number is on that page too.
